A Healthy Approach To Amenorrhea Treatment For Overall Well-Being

Stress is one of the most common issues which can cause amenorrhea

Amenorrhea means absence of bleeding in women. This can happen due to different reasons like stress, hormonal imbalance, excessive exercise or if there are any underlying medical issues. There are drugs and surgeries which can help you achieve your periods but to attain optimal wellness we need a more holistic approach.

Stress is one of the most common issues which can cause amenorrhea. Yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises and some TLC (tender loving care) can help balance the hypothalamic pituitary ovarian axis (HPOA) which will ensure that all the hormones are acting in sync. In addition, adequate intake of micronutrients such as iron, zinc, magnesium and vitamins are also important for the hormonal health of the body. Amenorrhea itself can cause stress affecting your mental and physical health. Taking help from family friends or even a counsellor can help you regulate it.

Exercise is important but you need to see how much exercise is right for you. Pushing your body beyond its capacity can disturb your hormone levels which leads to missed or irregular periods. Listen to your body, exercise how much your body allows and don’t go beyond your limits.

Another key point is your body mass index. Body mass index is a calculation of your height and weight. The ideal BMI for Indian women is 18-23 kg/m2. The point is that we don’t want to be over or under that as being underweight or overweight can disturb the hormonal balance. Ideally, maintaining a balanced diet would help regulate this. Even your fad diets like keto diet, GM diet, Atkins diet can affect your balance. If you have difficulty in maintaining a balanced diet, consult a nutritionist who can manager your diet.

Besides your diet, sleep is also very important. You need to ensure getting proper amount of sleep. Lack of sleep or rest can dysregulate your hormones. Ensure you have a proper bedtime routine so you get adequate and a peaceful sleep.

Amenorrhea can also be caused due to exposure to toxins, like smoking, certain chemicals present in plastics and household products. Consider switching to natural eco-friendly products.

Remember all the things I’ve mentioned above are in general but the approach towards your overall wellness in amenorrhea needs to be individualised and you need to be guided by your gynaecologist so that the treatment protocol aligns with your needs and preferences.
