Manage Hypertension with Ayurvedic ways

Unfortunately, as the name suggests, many people are not even aware of the impending health risks because of elevated blood pressure

Hypertension is the 'Silent Killer Disease' that affects about 15-37 per cent of the global adult population.

Chew two-three raw garlic cloves every day. Garlic slows down the pulse rate and balances the heart's rhythm. Known commonly as the silent killer, Hypertension puts people at the risk of heart, kidney or brain diseases. Unfortunately, as the name suggests, many people are not even aware of the impending health risks because of elevated blood pressure. “When blood pressure rises above 140/90 it manifests as elevated heart rate, vision blurring, confusion, anxiety, fatigue or buzzing in the ears. Left unmanaged, it may become the cause of heart disorders, kidney failure or vision loss. Hypertension depends on multiple factors such as age, gender, race, genetics, family history and of course diet, lifestyle, sleep patterns and psychological wellbeing,” said Dr Partap Chauhan, Founder-Director Jiva Ayurveda.

The causes of hypertension are primarily living a sedentary lifestyle and consuming a sodium-heavy diet. Salty foods, snacks, many packaged goods and canned soups use sodium for its preservative properties. Consuming too much of these items too often may elevate blood pressure over time. Genetics and a family history of hypertension are also important factors. In Ayurvedic terms, Vata dosha becomes aggravated because of faulty diets, lifestyles and too much stress or anxiety. That eventually is at the root of Hypertension. Impairment of Vata dosha can be regulated by strengthening the digestive fire which thereby helps in removing toxins blocking the movement of Vata.

Ayurveda has effective interventions and preventions for Hypertension. The Ayurvedic line of Hypertension treatment is aimed at identifying the root cause of the condition and then designing a personalized treatment plan containing Ayurvedic herbs, diet charts and lifestyle recommendations. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on diet and lifestyle because they play a very critical role in creating the problem, hence they can treat the problem as well!  . Secondly, the toxins that have already accumulated in the heart channels have to be eliminated. And lastly, mind relaxation techniques – including meditation, yoga and pranayama – are recommended to ensure that the mind remains calm and stable,’’ added Dr. Chauhan.

Hypertension is caused because of unbalanced Vata Dosha. Gentle exercises in the morning and self-massage (Abhayanga) with sesame oil balances the doshas in the body and promotes good circulation in the nervous system and lymphatic vessels. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Bhringraj, Jatamasi, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Vacha (Acorus Calamus) are some of the Ayurvedic herbs that can help you relax your mind and body and relieve you off your stress.

Dr. Chauhan further added, “Grind four basil leaves and two margosa (neem) leaves together with four teaspoons water. Take this mixture on an empty stomach in the morning with a cup of water.”

Garlic also helps in managing Hypertension. It slows down the pulse rate and balances the heart's rhythm. Chew two-three raw garlic cloves every day.
